I was wondering if any GD jams reached the intensity of Viola Lee Blues right before it returned to the verses. I really dig when it is taken so far out you can't imagine it getting back together but somehow *BAM* you're right back in regular old Viola Lee. Any other songs out there that match its intensity? I've heard Playin's come close but never quite up to the otherworldliness of Viola Lee.

Try the 12/28/69 Mason's Children, both jams are way out there and off the charts in intensity...

outstanding suggestion Cliff!
I loved the whole show. That High Time really got me smiling.

And a suggestion to you Rings and Bells:
refer to the Let It Grow thread below and the Birdsong thread above. There has got to be some of what you are looking for between the two. Those two songs are usual chock-full of "getting lost right before getting found"moments

I seem to remember some Cream Puff Wars that really got intense. No links, sorry. They didn't play it very often and only in the early days...

The truly sick Alligator>Cautions from 1968 would fit your request. They have the same Viola Lee intensity IMHO. Try this one on for size

The other nights surrounding this show are equally great..

If you accept no imitations though check out the Haight Street Viola Lee from 3/3/68. Phil Lesh spoke highly of this one in his book Searching For The Sound.

Thanks jackstraw86 for the Alligator suggestion. The link you gave me is truly smokin' and intense. I've been listening to a lot of Alligator/Cautions lately and this is one of the best--if not the best--Alligator I've heard thus far.
